The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the alleged renovation of the Abuloma Police Outpost by suspected cultists and relieved two senior officers of their duties pending an investigation into the incident.
The development followed the circulation of videos on social media showing suspected cultists celebrating the reported completion of renovation work at the police facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The videos sparked widespread reactions, with several social media users questioning how individuals suspected of belonging to cult groups could renovate a police facility and publicly celebrate the project.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing, strongly condemned any conduct capable of undermining the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement also warned against any action or association that could confer legitimacy, recognition or acceptance on suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations.
According to the spokesperson, police facilities are public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law and must not be used as platforms for criminal groups to gain public recognition or influence.
As part of the immediate response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the Divisional Officer overseeing the affected police outpost have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police has also ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the veracity of the allegations.
The investigation will examine the identities and backgrounds of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, as well as the police officers who authorised or approved the project.
Authorities will also determine whether the appropriate procedures were followed, whether any officers breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Force, and the extent of any police personnel’s involvement.
The Command’s action comes amid public scrutiny over the circumstances under which the renovation was carried out and the reported celebration at the police facility.
The police have yet to establish publicly whether any officers were involved in wrongdoing, as the investigation is expected to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
