Ogun Police Rescue 11 Ghanaians Allegedly Held Hostage After Being Lured to Nigeria With Visa Promises

The Ogun State Police Command has rescued 11 Ghanaian nationals who were allegedly held hostage in Sagamu after being lured to Nigeria with promises of securing Canadian and Spanish visas.

The victims, comprising seven men and four women, were rescued during an operation carried out by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following intelligence received on October 19.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi.

According to Oluseyi, the police swiftly mobilised their operatives to the suspected hideout after receiving actionable intelligence, leading to the successful rescue of all 11 victims.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the victims were allegedly deceived by a fellow Ghanaian national who promised to facilitate their travel abroad.

The victims were said to have paid GH₵40,000 each in anticipation of travelling overseas before they were brought to Nigeria and allegedly held against their will.

The police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify everyone connected to the alleged criminal operation.

“The rescued victims are receiving appropriate care and support, while detectives intensify efforts to track down and apprehend all persons connected with the alleged criminal network,” Oluseyi stated.

Ogun Police Launch Manhunt for Suspects

Reacting to the successful rescue, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its swift response and professionalism.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, tackling transnational crime and preventing criminal groups from exploiting unsuspecting individuals.

He stressed that Ogun State would not be allowed to become a safe haven for criminals who allegedly prey on people’s hopes of securing opportunities abroad.

The police commissioner also assured residents and the general public that efforts would continue to identify, track down and arrest those responsible for the alleged crime.

The incident highlights the risks associated with unverified overseas travel arrangements, particularly schemes involving promises of foreign visas and employment opportunities.

Authorities have continued to urge members of the public to verify travel agents and immigration-related offers before making payments or travelling under arrangements they cannot independently confirm.
