Popular Channels Television journalist, Seun Okinbaloye, has raised concerns that the 2027 general election could be compromised if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fails to urgently clean up the voters’ register.
Okinbaloye raised the alarm on Friday night during Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, warning that alleged manipulation of the voters’ register could already be laying the foundation for electoral fraud.
According to him, early signs and intelligence reports suggest that politicians may be exploiting weaknesses in the registration process, with cases of alleged underage registration, multiple registrations and ghost voters reportedly emerging across the country.
“The 2027 election is already being rigged right now. Not on election day. It is being rigged with the voters’ register. If INEC does not clean it up now, we are wasting our time,” Okinbaloye warned.
He called on INEC to carry out a thorough audit of the voters’ register and remove ineligible entries, including alleged fake names, deceased persons and underage voters.
The journalist stressed that Nigerians should not wait until election day to raise concerns about electoral malpractice, arguing that the credibility of any election begins with the integrity of the voters’ register.
“If the register is dirty, the election is dirty. INEC must act now,” he added.
Okinbaloye’s comments come as political activities gradually build ahead of the 2027 general election, with increasing attention being placed on the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and the need for credible polls.
