A Wizz Air flight travelling from the United Kingdom to Bulgaria was diverted to Hungary on Monday, November 2, following a reported bomb threat.
The aircraft departed from London Luton Airport and was scheduled to land in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, when the threat was reportedly received while it was airborne.
In a statement shared with Euronews, the Hungary-based airline confirmed that the flight was redirected to Budapest.
“Wizz Air confirms that today’s London Luton–Sofia flight was diverted to Budapest following a bomb threat received during the flight,” the airline said.
It added that the aircraft landed safely at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport in line with established security procedures.
After landing, the plane was directed to a designated parking stand, where security officials carried out checks on the aircraft and passengers.
The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities, stressing that the safety of passengers and crew remained its highest priority.
Meanwhile, Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi disclosed in a social media post that a Hungarian military Gripen fighter jet had been deployed to escort the aircraft back to Budapest.
According to the minister, the fighter jet later returned to its base in Kecskemét, central Hungary, while the police took over the situation.
Data from flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that the aircraft was flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina when it changed course towards Hungary.
