The Democratic Party has taken control of both chambers of the United States Congress after recording significant victories in the Senate and securing a projected majority in the House of Representatives.
According to Al Jazeera, Democrats have officially secured 51 seats in the Senate, wresting control of the chamber from the Republican Party.
The party also recorded major victories in traditionally Republican-leaning states, including Texas, South Carolina, Iowa and Kansas, during a series of closely contested Senate races.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats are projected to win at least 235 seats, exceeding the 218 seats required to secure a majority, according to CNBC’s Election Desk.
The party also made significant gains across several congressional districts, including constituencies that had been redrawn in favour of Republicans.
The results represent a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which had sought to maintain control of Congress.
Democrats reportedly flipped Republican-held Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.
Meanwhile, counting was still ongoing in two closely contested Senate races in Michigan and Minnesota, where Democratic incumbents were seeking to retain their seats.
