Nigeria’s U17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, have made history by reaching their first-ever FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final following an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals.
The Nigerian youngsters secured the historic triumph on Wednesday night, November 4, to book their place in the final of the competition for the first time since the country began participating in the tournament.
The victory was inspired by outstanding performances from Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru, who scored all three goals for Nigeria.
Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, giving the Flamingos the lead before Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute.
Bashiru completed her brace in the 80th minute, extending Nigeria’s lead and putting the contest beyond Brazil’s reach.
The historic qualification marks a major improvement on the Flamingos’ previous best performance at the tournament, when they finished third and claimed the bronze medal in the 2022 edition.
Following their impressive victory over Brazil, Nigeria will now face Japan in the final as they seek to win their first-ever FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup title.
Gists9ja reports that the Flamingos’ achievement represents a significant milestone for Nigerian women’s football, as the team prepares for a historic opportunity to become world champions at the U17 level.
