Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has criticised recent visits by some prominent Northern politicians to Daura, the hometown of Nigeria’s immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Senator Sani, the politicians conceal a larger agenda aimed at forming a strong Northern alliance to challenge and depose President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Sani, who made the statement on Monday in a post on his Facebook page, described it as “a regrouping of Northern political forces for the next general election—a project that will eventually kiss the dust”.
Sani expressed concern over the politicians’ attempts to revive Buhari’s political influence without addressing past failures.
“They want to resurrect Buhari’s political charm, fanaticism, and mobilize the gullible to another hollow and bewildering end,” he remarked, highlighting increased poverty and insecurity during Buhari’s presidency.
He criticised the premature plotting by Northern elites against Tinubu, emphasising the potential risks to national unity.
“Their obsession with power is condemnable,” Sani noted, cautioning against exploiting Northern sentiments for political gain.
Sani concluded by urging Northern citizens to reject such maneouvres, asserting, “The Daura homage of the disgruntled and the obsessed will fail. Our people in the North should reject these faces and their plots. They have nothing to offer.”
His remarks reflect growing tensions within Northern politics ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
Some of the prominent northern politicians who recently visit Buhari in Daura are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai and the immediate past governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, now senator representing Sokoto South.
