The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, recently addressed public concerns regarding the president’s decision to acquire a refurbished Airbus A330.
Contrary to some assumptions that a new aircraft was purchased, Onanuga clarified that the plane was a refurbished model, chosen to reduce maintenance costs associated with aging jets in the presidential fleet.
He highlighted that previous aircraft, including a Boeing B737-700 bought under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had become costly due to extensive wear and high maintenance expenses.
Critics, including some 2023 election opponents, argue that the decision to purchase any jet, new or refurbished, disregards the hardships many Nigerians are facing, with inflation and energy prices reaching unprecedented levels.
However, Onanuga emphasized that this refurbished plane, secured through National Assembly approval, was a pragmatic choice aimed at safeguarding the president’s safety while being mindful of state resources.
Addressing concerns that the purchase was for Tinubu’s personal use, Onanuga stressed that the aircraft is government property, meant to serve future leaders and ultimately benefit the country.
He urged Nigerians to focus on the safety of the presidency, highlighting that the jet will remain a national asset well beyond Tinubu’s term.
