Ten people lost their lives in a tragic building collapse in the Jegede Olorunsogo area within the Ona Ara local government of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident has drawn attention to structural safety concerns in the area and has prompted an immediate response from local authorities and emergency services.
The news was confirmed by Rev. Akinyemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, in a report to Vanguard. According to Rev. Akinyinka, the Fire Services team was alerted by distress calls from residents in the neighborhood around 2 a.m. on the day of the incident. Upon arrival, rescue teams found a devastating scene with extensive debris from the collapsed structure.
Akinyinka explained that rescue efforts were launched immediately, allowing responders to pull seven people from the wreckage alive. “We received a distressed call at around 2 a.m. from the Jegede Olunloyo area of Ibadan,” he stated. “As of now, 10 individuals have been recovered from the debris, unfortunately deceased, while 7 others were rescued alive.”
Emergency services are continuing to search the debris for any remaining victims. “Rescue operations are still in progress,” Akinyinka added, expressing appreciation for the efforts and cooperation of those involved in the ongoing operation. The incident has underscored the importance of stringent building regulations and raised questions about construction safety in the area as investigations into the collapse are expected to follow.
Local authorities, along with state emergency services, are also calling on residents to be vigilant about safety conditions in their surroundings and to report any structures showing signs of structural weakness.
