Gunmen have kidnapped Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State.
The abduction took place on Tuesday evening while Fr. Azubuike was returning from a pastoral assignment near Ayayi community, authorities confirmed.
The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe has expressed deep concern over the incident, releasing an official statement calling for prayers from the faithful. Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, Chancellor and Secretary of the diocese, shared the details in a message that read: “I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped this evening, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at about 6 p.m.” The diocese has asked for fervent prayers, hoping for the priest’s safe return to his parish, and expressed gratitude for the solidarity and support from the community.
The abduction has shaken both the local and wider Catholic community, as it underscores the growing insecurity in the region. Imo State, like many other parts of Nigeria, has seen a rise in criminal activities, including kidnappings, as well as attacks on religious leaders. In response, the Imo State Police Command, under the leadership of Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye, confirmed that an investigation is underway to locate and rescue Fr. Azubuike. Okoye assured the public that the police are working tirelessly to resolve the situation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
