A major reshuffling of senior generals in the Nigerian Army is expected following the passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
According to Daily Trust, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is likely to announce the promotion of Lieutenant General Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff.
Sources indicate that the appointment will require Senate approval, after which a significant restructuring within the Army is expected.
A senior military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing mourning period and restrictions on discussing the matter publicly, revealed that several of Oluyede’s peers from his training cohort might be reassigned to key positions within the Defence Headquarters.
In response to inquiries about possible retirements, the officer clarified that no generals from the 39 Regular Course would be forced into retirement. However, some may be reassigned to roles within military institutions.
As of now, members of the 38 Regular Course, including those who served alongside Lagbaja and other service chiefs, have retired since last year, but many from the 39 RC remain in service. These individuals are expected to be redeployed rather than retired.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, various governors, and other notable figures expressed their condolences over the death of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja yesterday.
