Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has firmly denied accusations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds during his administration, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated.
Okowa argued that the allegations are merely attempts to tarnish his reputation and divert attention from his administration’s achievements. He also expressed confidence in the outcome of any investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), asserting that he is committed to accountability and transparency and has consistently acted in the best interests of Delta State’s citizens.
Speaking recently at his residence in Asaba during a meeting with the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Okowa addressed the claims, explaining that the accusations lack factual support. “This petition was submitted months ago, but for political reasons, some individuals are now insisting that I be called before the EFCC,” he said. Okowa added that the alleged figure of N1.3 trillion is unrealistic, noting that it would require embezzling between N16 billion and N20 billion monthly—a sum he finds unimaginable for any state official, let alone a governor.
He highlighted the financial challenges faced early in his administration, especially in 2015, 2016, and 2017, when state revenue was insufficient to cover salaries. “At that time, some local governments, like Ethiope East, owed up to 15 months in back wages, and certain state employees received only half-pay,” Okowa said. He emphasized that Delta State has one of the largest payrolls in the country, supporting over 56,000 workers and meeting monthly salaries and pensions that total more than N11 billion. Despite these costs, he noted, employees were always paid promptly, and his administration undertook significant development projects, particularly in the riverine regions.
Okowa maintained that he welcomes investigations, recognizing the EFCC’s responsibility to verify claims. However, he expressed disappointment with those he believes falsely filed the allegations. “I believe in justice, and I trust that when the facts emerge, the truth will prevail,” he said. “But I also pray for those who allowed themselves to be used for political purposes. When the repercussions come, they may be profound, yet I hope they find forgiveness.”
Okowa expressed support for his successor, Governor Oborevwori, who he believes will continue advancing Delta State’s development agenda. “I have faith that Governor Oborevwori will make significant strides in the coming year. I pledge my continued support to him and to the Urhobo Progress Union, as I am confident that he has much to offer our state,” Okowa concluded.
