Ohanaeze Ndigbo Endorses Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has declared its full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, emphasizing their potential to reshape Nigeria’s economic landscape.

In a statement issued on Sunday, December 1, 2024, and signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze described the reforms as a critical step toward fostering equitable economic growth. The group highlighted the anticipated benefits for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Nigerian workers, and the broader business community, particularly through the elimination of double taxation.

A Boost for SMEs and Workers

Ohanaeze praised the reforms for addressing systemic challenges that have stifled economic growth, particularly for SMEs, which are the backbone of the Igbo entrepreneurial community.

“These tax reforms represent a transformative opportunity for the rejuvenation of SMEs and the enhancement of Nigerian workers’ fortunes,” the statement read. The group stressed that the elimination of double taxation, often imposed by state governors, would foster a more equitable business environment, attracting both local and foreign investments.

A Call for Unity Among Lawmakers

In its statement, Ohanaeze urged Southern lawmakers to set aside partisan differences and work together to ensure the smooth passage of the reforms in the National Assembly.

“It is imperative that our Southern legislators close ranks, transcending partisan divides, to ensure that the Tax Reforms Bills navigate both chambers of the National Assembly successfully,” the group emphasized.

Ohanaeze also expressed disappointment over resistance from some Northern governors and lawmakers, accusing them of trying to maintain a VAT derivation structure that disproportionately benefits certain regions.

“If the Northern political elites succeed in thwarting President Tinubu’s initiatives, it could set a dangerous precedent, fostering resistance against meaningful reform,” the group warned.

Benefits for the Igbo Community

The organization noted that the reforms align with the interests of the Igbo people, renowned for their entrepreneurial spirit. By fostering private-sector growth and creating a fairer regulatory framework, the measures are expected to empower Igbo businesses and enhance economic opportunities in the region.

Solidarity with the Tinubu Administration

Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Tinubu administration’s efforts to build a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria. The group cited its earlier decision to abstain from nationwide protests as a demonstration of its cooperative stance.

“The promise of a prosperous and just Nigeria is within our reach, but it demands our collective resolve to advocate for transparency, equity, and sustainable economic growth,” the statement concluded.

Ohanaeze’s endorsement adds a significant voice to the national discourse on the proposed tax reforms, underscoring their importance in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and advancing the country’s development goals.
