Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has voiced its unwavering support for the proposed tax reforms put forward by President Bola Tinubu, describing them as vital for the economic growth and well-being of the Igbo nation.
The group’s endorsement comes after a thorough examination of the bills, consultations with key stakeholders, and an in-depth analysis of the potential impact on the Nigerian economy.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that the tax reforms would benefit the nation’s economy, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Nigerian workers, while also eliminating the widespread problem of double taxation. The group expressed confidence that the reforms would lead to a more equitable business climate, which in turn would foster both local and foreign investment opportunities.
“We have closely reviewed the proposals and engaged in extensive consultations with a broad range of stakeholders, and our conclusion is clear: these tax reforms are not just legislative measures—they represent a transformative opportunity to rejuvenate SMEs and uplift the economic fortunes of Nigerian workers,” the statement read.
The organization particularly stressed the significant role that the Igbo community, renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit, would play in the success of the reforms. Ohanaeze noted that the proposed changes would provide a level playing field for businesses, with a focus on eliminating the double taxation currently imposed by some state governors. These reforms are seen as critical to supporting Nigeria’s vibrant private sector, where the Igbo people are pivotal players.
“By eliminating the scourge of double taxation imposed by unscrupulous state governors, these reforms will pave the way for an equitable business climate that significantly elevates both local and foreign investment potential. The Igbo people, with our entrepreneurial zeal and deep commitment to economic self-determination, stand to gain immensely from these reforms,” Ohanaeze said.
The organization also called on Southern lawmakers in the National Assembly to put aside their political differences and unite in support of the reforms. It urged Southern senators and House of Representatives members to prioritize national interest and work together to ensure the successful passage of the Tax Reforms Bills. Ohanaeze’s appeal highlights its commitment to cooperation, as reflected in its previous decision to abstain from participating in protests against the Tinubu government in August 2024.
“We call on all Southern Federal Lawmakers—Senators and House of Representatives members—to unite in support of President Tinubu’s transformative tax reforms. This is a call for unity and collective action to ensure that the Tax Reforms Bills pass through both chambers of the National Assembly smoothly,” the statement emphasized.
The group also voiced its disappointment over the opposition from some northern political leaders, alleging that their resistance stems from a desire to protect the status quo, particularly the VAT derivation principles that they argue benefit specific interests at the expense of broader national growth. Ohanaeze expressed concern that this opposition could undermine the progress that Nigeria urgently needs.
“It is disheartening to see certain northern governors and political elites mobilizing against the Tax Reforms Bills, relying on their numerical advantage to block these critical reforms. This orchestrated opposition seeks to preserve the current VAT system that unjustly favors select interests. If the northern political elites succeed in stifling President Tinubu’s initiatives, it will set a dangerous precedent for the future of economic reforms in Nigeria,” the group warned.
Ohanaeze further highlighted the long-term implications of the proposed reforms, stressing that a successful passage would not only bolster Nigeria’s economic outlook but also strengthen the Tinubu administration’s position. However, they cautioned that any failure to enact the reforms could lead to a politically motivated backlash, particularly as the 2027 elections approach.
