Edo Governor Swears in Three Judges Marginalized by Predecessor
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges previously sidelined by the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, with the governor emphasizing his commitment to justice and fairness in governance.
Fulfilling a Campaign Promise
During the event, Governor Okpebholo reflected on the delay in appointing the three judges, despite their recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) alongside five others. In his inaugural speech on November 12, 2024, he had vowed to address this oversight, and the swearing-in marked the fulfillment of that promise.
“The NJC recommended eight individuals for appointment as judges of the Edo State High Court in June 2023. However, the previous administration only swore in five, leaving three qualified individuals sidelined without justification,” Okpebholo stated.
He condemned discrimination and favoritism in public appointments, insisting that no one should be marginalized due to personal bias or lack of political connections.
“Today, we correct that injustice. The three judges will now join their colleagues on the bench to serve as beacons of hope for the judiciary and the citizens of Edo State,” he added.
Strengthening the Judiciary
Governor Okpebholo reiterated his commitment to upholding the independence and integrity of the judiciary as a critical pillar of democracy. He called on the newly sworn-in judges to uphold the highest standards of conduct, ensure impartial resolution of disputes, protect citizens’ rights, and hold wrongdoers accountable.
“As judges of the Edo State High Court, your duty is to maintain justice and fairness in society. The judiciary is central to our democracy, and your role is vital to ensuring that justice is accessible and impartial,” he said.

The newly sworn-in judges are:
- Ojo Maureen Osa
- Okundamiya Godwin Jeff
- Edoghogho Eboigbe
These individuals, recommended by the NJC, had faced significant delays in their appointments, which Governor Okpebholo described as an unnecessary injustice.

Speaking on behalf of the three judges, Justice Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for addressing the delay and giving them the opportunity to serve.
“We are deeply grateful for this chance to contribute to the administration of justice in Edo State. We assure you of our commitment to uphold the trust placed in us,” she said.
