The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of public schools in the Kabusa community of Abuja, citing the dilapidated state of the structures as unacceptable for educational purposes. During a ceremony on Tuesday marking the flag-off of rehabilitation works on the 9.8km Kabusa–Takushara road, Wike emphasized the urgent need to upgrade the schools to provide a proper learning environment for children.
Wike expressed his dismay at the condition of the schools, stating that if President Bola Tinubu were to see the state of the facilities, he would likely lose his position as a minister. He remarked, “They said this is a school, is it not? Is it a school? My brother, I will not accept this as a school for our people to have quality education, and therefore, there will be immediate upgrading of this school to be what a school is supposed to be.”
He further emphasized that the current state of the schools is far from suitable for providing quality education, and thus, urgent action would be taken to transform them into proper institutions of learning. Wike added, “I’m sure if Mr. President comes here and sees that this is the school our children are learning in, I will lose my job. And I don’t want to lose my job, so we are going to make sure this school becomes what it is supposed to be.”
In his statement, Wike also acknowledged the blessings the country has received, insisting that Nigerian children should not have to endure such poor learning conditions. He called on citizens to pray for President Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians, including ensuring that the nation’s children receive the quality education they deserve.
