Danlami Alhassan, a former chairman of Ningi Local Government in Bauchi State, was reportedly assaulted and shot by a police officer attached to the Nigeria Police’s 12th Zonal Headquarters in Bauchi. The incident occurred near a flyover construction site in the Wunti area of Bauchi City.
Alhassan recounted that a motorcyclist, later identified as a police officer, attempted to stop him without providing a clear reason. Fearing for his safety, he did not comply. The officer then pursued him, firing a teargas canister that struck Alhassan on the head, causing severe injuries and igniting his vehicle.
As Alhassan slowed down in a more populated area, the officer obstructed his vehicle and fired at him again, causing blood to flow from his head. Passersby, recognizing him, helped extinguish the fire engulfing his car.
The officer fled the scene, leaving behind a bag containing a cold-weather jacket, teargas canisters, and an identification card. These items were handed over to the GRA Police Station in Bauchi as evidence.
Alhassan was treated at a teaching hospital and discharged after his condition stabilized. He has since called for a thorough investigation into the unprovoked attack and demanded justice.
The zonal police public relations officer (ZPPRO), Thomas Goni, confirmed the incident and assured the public of a thorough and impartial investigation. The implicated officer has been identified and will face disciplinary action in accordance with police regulations.
Goni emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining accountability and professionalism. He noted that efforts are underway to reassess police training and protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring officers manage situations with respect and in alignment with community expectations.
Alhassan’s vehicle, which was severely damaged in the attack, is being held at the police station as evidence while investigations continue.
