A panel convened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly is reportedly set to submit its findings.
The Bisi Akande-led panel, which includes former governors Olusegun Osoba and Akinwunmi Ambode, along with other key figures, has been working behind the scenes to find a political solution to the standoff within the state legislature.
Proposed Resolution: Leadership Reshuffle in the Assembly
According to sources familiar with the panel’s discussions, a leadership restructuring is being considered. The report is expected to recommend the removal of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, with the speakership returning to Lagos West Senatorial District.
A senior All Progressives Congress (APC) official in Lagos, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that both Meranda and Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled former Speaker, are likely to vacate their positions as part of a broader peace deal.
“Meranda will step down, and Obasa will also step down. They will now pick someone else from Lagos West, which is the largest senatorial zone in the state. The lawmakers seem to have reached a consensus—otherwise, there won’t be peace.”
Obasa’s Legal Battle and Political Compromise
Obasa, who was impeached by his fellow lawmakers while the Assembly was in recess, has challenged his removal in court, arguing that the process was unlawful. However, as part of the negotiated settlement, he may be required to withdraw his lawsuit against the Assembly and Meranda.
“There is always a legal solution, but there is also a political solution,” the source noted. “In this case, compromises will have to be made.”
Party Leadership Weighs In
Another source within the APC revealed that those who opposed Obasa’s leadership feel they have already won the battle, as he is unlikely to return as Speaker. Meanwhile, Meranda, who was appointed under unique circumstances, is said to be willing to step aside for the sake of stability.
“Meranda was never desperate for power, and she understands the need for compromise,” the source added. “In the coming week, an agreement is expected to be finalized.”
APC’s Mediation Efforts
The Chairman of the APC’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Chief Tajudeen Olusi, confirmed that the party is actively mediating in the crisis.
“The party is involved in the mediation process. At the right time, we will communicate the conclusions of the panel. When conflicts arise within the legislature or among party members, it is our duty to listen to all sides and find a resolution,” Olusi told reporters.
Awaiting the Final Report
With discussions in their final stages, the panel’s report is expected to shape the next phase of leadership in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The coming days will determine whether the political compromise holds or if the crisis will escalate further.
