The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has strongly refuted reports alleging that Fulani herdsmen recently launched a series of attacks on villages in the state, leading to the deaths of at least 25 people.
In an official statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the command described these claims as “completely false, sensational, and misleading,” stating that the reports were based on fabricated details, including fictitious names and events that did not occur within the state.
Ndukwe emphasized that such reports were part of a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and undermine the efforts of law enforcement agencies working to maintain peace and security in the region. “The information circulated in some media outlets is far from the truth and lacks any credible foundation,” Ndukwe remarked.
Recent media coverage suggested that about 25 individuals had been killed in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State following alleged attacks by Fulani herdsmen. These reports painted a grim picture, claiming that the violence had left several others injured and led to widespread displacement among local residents. Many individuals reportedly fled to neighboring states like Anambra and Kogi in search of safety, further fueling fears of a growing security crisis.
However, the police spokesperson rejected these claims, pointing out the vague and unverified nature of the reports. “Terms like ‘at least’ are speculative and have no place in responsible journalism,” Ndukwe stated. He argued that such language not only lacked accuracy but also contributed to unnecessary panic and fear among the public.
Ndukwe also referred to the statement made by the State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, who condemned the spread of “false, malicious, and unfounded reports,” highlighting the detrimental impact of such misinformation on public confidence in security efforts.
While addressing the claims, Ndukwe reassured residents of Enugu State that the police remain committed to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of the people. He urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and continue to place their trust in the state’s law enforcement agencies, whose efforts to protect citizens and maintain order have been unwavering.
“The fight against crime and criminal activities continues, and we urge everyone to remain vigilant, support law enforcement, and report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” Ndukwe concluded.
