Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that the recent defection of former PDP vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) serves as a strong validation of the political position he took during the 2023 general elections.
Wike’s remarks were conveyed in a statement issued late Wednesday, April 23, 2025, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in Abuja.
According to the Minister, Okowa’s public endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu underscores what he had foreseen during the 2023 electoral period—particularly his decision not to back PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
“This is yet another confirmation of the President’s achievements in governance and national development,” Wike stated. “It is also a clear vindication of the stand I took in 2023, which was rooted in the broader interest of national unity.”
‘Others Should Follow Suit’
Wike lauded both Okowa and Oborevwori for what he described as a “timely and bold” political decision, adding that their switch to the ruling APC should inspire other Nigerians still undecided to align with President Tinubu’s administration.
“I commend Dr. Okowa and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for taking this courageous and strategic step. Their decision reflects a growing acknowledgment of President Tinubu’s dedication to national progress and inclusivity,” he said.
According to the former Rivers State governor, their endorsement arrives at a crucial moment for the Niger Delta region, which he believes stands to benefit significantly from aligning with the federal government.
“They have come forward at the right time to express support for the President. This positions the people of the Niger Delta to benefit more from ongoing federal projects and policies,” he noted.
Wike Reflects on 2023 Decisions
Wike, who famously distanced himself from his party’s presidential campaign last year, insisted that his controversial stance during the 2023 elections was driven by a vision for a more united and equitable Nigeria.
“I’m particularly pleased that others are beginning to see what I saw before the 2023 election. They are now joining the Renewed Hope train,” he concluded.
Wike’s comments add to the growing political reverberations caused by the defections, which many analysts view as a signal of deeper shifts within Nigeria’s political establishment ahead of the 2027 elections.
