Renowned Nigerian business executive and socialite, Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The arrest was confirmed by her legal counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), who disclosed that Achimugu was apprehended at around 5 a.m. upon her return from London at the airport.
Achimugu’s arrest comes amid ongoing investigations into allegations of money laundering and criminal conspiracy linked to the embattled MBA Trading and Capital Limited scheme.
Arrest Violates Court Agreement — Legal Team
Her legal team, led by Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN) and Chikaosolu Ojukwu, expressed outrage over the EFCC’s actions, describing the arrest as a violation of the court-sanctioned agreement.
“She returned voluntarily and was expected to appear before the EFCC today. The arrest defies the spirit of that agreement,” said Ojukwu.
“She has since begun a hunger strike. Aisha Achimugu is now a prisoner of conscience.”
EFCC Responds, Maintains Legal Procedure
In response, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that Achimugu was expected to comply with the Federal High Court order to appear before the agency on April 29, but did not immediately address the arrest at the airport.
“We will respond appropriately in due course,” Oyewale stated.
Background: Court Orders and Human Rights Suit
Achimugu had previously been declared wanted by the EFCC on March 28, over alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy and money laundering scandal. She responded by filing a fundamental human rights enforcement suit—Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/626/2025—against six security agencies:
- The EFCC
- Nigeria Police Force
- ICPC
- Department of State Services (SSS)
- Nigeria Immigration Service
- Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
In its counter-affidavit, the EFCC claimed she was earlier granted administrative bail but violated the terms by failing to honour subsequent invitations.
Court Ruling on Her Appearance
Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ruled on the matter earlier this week. Acknowledging Achimugu’s willingness to cooperate, he ordered her to appear before the EFCC on April 29, and asked the Commission to return to court on April 30 with an update on her compliance.
