Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has firmly debunked circulating reports suggesting he is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Kyari dismissed the claims as “deliberate falsehood” and a “calculated smear campaign” aimed at damaging his reputation shortly after his recent departure from the NNPCL.
No EFCC Arrest – Kyari Sets the Record Straight
In a late-night post on Saturday via his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), Kyari reassured the public that he is not under investigation or in EFCC custody. Instead, he revealed that he is currently taking a well-earned rest after over 30 years of service in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector—six of which were spent as the Group CEO of the NNPCL.
“In the last few days, especially in the past two hours, I have received numerous calls from concerned friends and family over a viral claim that I was arrested by the EFCC. This is pure mischief and a coordinated attempt to mislead the public,” Kyari wrote.
Transparency and Accountability at the Core of His Service
Kyari, who played a pivotal role in the transition of the NNPC to a fully commercialized limited liability company, stated that his leadership was marked by transparency, integrity, and accountability.
“I served with the fear of God. As a Muslim, I believe that even if I’m not held accountable before man, I will be accountable before Allah. I am prepared to explain my stewardship, anytime,” he said.
Disinformation Poses Threat to National Reputation
The former NNPCL boss cautioned that such unfounded allegations could tarnish Nigeria’s international image, particularly among potential investors monitoring developments in the country’s petroleum industry.
“Spreading unverified claims and disinformation does no one any good—not me, not the NNPCL, and certainly not Nigeria. It creates uncertainty and could discourage foreign investors from engaging with the country,” he warned.
Acknowledging Support and Reaffirming Readiness
Kyari expressed gratitude to those who reached out with concern and reiterated that he is always available to respond to any official or lawful inquiries related to his time in office.
“I remain open to any inquiry and am confident in the legacy I left behind at the NNPCL,” he concluded.
Leadership Transition at NNPCL
Kyari’s exit came in April 2025 after a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also dissolved the NNPCL Board. In his place, Bashir Ojulari was appointed as the new Group CEO, effective April 2, 2025. The reshuffle is part of broader efforts to reposition the NNPCL and drive foreign investment into Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
