In a heartfelt tribute to the late Abibat Mogaji, the mother of President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Government has named the ICT block at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja after her.
This gesture recognizes her immense contributions to the advancement of women’s rights and empowerment in Nigeria.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Tuesday, with Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, leading the event. In her address, the minister praised Abibat Mogaji as a symbol of strength, resilience, and advocacy for women’s empowerment. She described the late Mogaji as a trailblazer who dedicated her life to ensuring the betterment of women and the most vulnerable in society.
“We are gathered here today to celebrate a woman whose legacy is rooted in unwavering commitment to the values of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and humanitarian work,” Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim remarked. She continued by highlighting how Mogaji’s life and work stood as a testament to the resilience of a mother and matriarch who fought tirelessly for the rights of women and children, ensuring that they were never left behind in the pursuit of a better society.
The Minister also reflected on Abibat Mogaji’s lasting influence, noting that her efforts were pivotal in fostering a more compassionate Nigeria, where the rights of women were respected and upheld. “She was an extraordinary woman who, through her activism and leadership, has created an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations of women,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim added.
As part of the tribute, the Minister emphasized that the renaming of the ICT block would serve not only as a reminder of Mogaji’s dedication to the empowerment of women but also as a call to action for continued efforts toward improving the lives of women and children in the country. “The unveiling of this block in her honour is a powerful symbol of our collective commitment to advancing the rights of women, ensuring that their contributions to our nation are celebrated and acknowledged,” she said.
The ceremony also served as a reminder of the government’s ongoing pledge to promote gender inclusivity and work towards creating a society where every woman and child can achieve their full potential with dignity, pride, and equal opportunity.
In addition, the Minister reaffirmed that the Nigerian government would continue to support programs and initiatives that empower women, address societal inequalities, and create pathways for women to succeed in all sectors of life. Through this symbolic renaming, the government has once again demonstrated its commitment to women’s rights and to honoring those who have paved the way for future generations.
