Plateau State Police Dismiss Bomb Scare, Urge Calm Among Residents
The Plateau State Police Command has officially dismissed recent reports of suspected bomb explosions allegedly planted near Murtala Muhammed Way in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. Following an early morning alert on Monday about a potential explosive device in the area, security personnel swiftly responded by restricting vehicle movement while investigating the situation.
According to reports, the alarm was triggered by a shallow dug hole that caused public concern. However, after a thorough assessment, officers found no evidence of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) or any other threat at the location. The Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Emmanuel Adesina, conveyed through the command’s spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, that the reports of an IED were unfounded.
DSP Alfred stated: “At approximately 8:20 a.m. on November 12, 2024, the Plateau State Police Command received a report of a suspicious shallow hole near Murtala Mohammed Way, beside the Old JUTH fence. This raised concerns about a possible explosive device, leading to alarm among residents in the area.”
The police responded promptly, mobilizing a team led by the Area Commander Metro and the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, often referred to as the Anti-Bomb Squad. They were joined by the Divisional Police Officer of “C” Division, and upon their arrival, the area was immediately cordoned off for a detailed examination. The EOD team concluded that the site was free from any explosives, assuring the public of their safety. Commissioner Adesina and his team also visited the scene to oversee the response efforts.
The Police Commissioner commended the citizens of Plateau State for their vigilance and cooperation during the investigation and urged them to resume their normal activities without fear. “The area has been declared safe,” he reassured, adding that there are no imminent threats to lives or property.
Approximately ten years ago, Jos was shaken by a twin explosion near Terminus Market, leading to significant casualties and injuries. This history of violence has kept the community alert, which Commissioner Adesina sees as a positive sign of security awareness among residents.
In a related statement, Governor Caleb Mutfwang encouraged residents to remain calm, emphasizing the need to avoid spreading unverified information. According to his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the supposed explosive was nothing more than a stack of polythene bags that some individuals had mistaken for a bomb threat. This misinterpretation led to unnecessary fear and panic in the community.
Governor Mutfwang called on Plateau State citizens to remain vigilant, responsible, and united in their commitment to peace. “The people of Plateau State should focus on constructive efforts that support the government’s goal for lasting security and prosperity,” the statement read. He assured the public that his administration is working diligently to ensure peace and stability in the region.
The governor also urged residents to promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies, underscoring the importance of community involvement in maintaining a secure environment. He emphasized that while security personnel are prepared to respond to any threats, the cooperation and support of citizens play an essential role in building a peaceful and resilient Plateau State.
