The Methodist Church has expressed deep concern over the growing economic hardship that is fueling widespread hunger and frustration across Nigeria.
During a consecration ceremony in Lagos, where Dr. Evans Onyemara was installed as the new General Secretary of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) alongside 13 newly consecrated bishops, Right Rev. Emmanuel Udofia, a senior Methodist clergyman, spoke out against the rising distress in the country. He urged church leaders to be pillars of support, offering stability and hope to communities that are struggling to survive.
“There is widespread hunger, frustration, and a desperate cry for justice among the people of our land,” Rev. Udofia lamented, highlighting the dire conditions faced by many Nigerians. He pointed to the need for church leaders to step up in this time of crisis, offering spiritual and emotional guidance.
Rev. Udofia further emphasized the responsibility of the newly consecrated bishops to lead with humility, spiritual discipline, and authenticity. He called for a pastoral approach that remains grounded in simplicity, much like the ministry demonstrated by Jesus Christ.
“The ministry that Jesus Christ demonstrated was straightforward—calling people to the Word of God without confusion or the desire for personal gain,” he said. “A true leader must be consultative, prayerful, and deeply aware of the unique challenges faced by their communities, whether it’s spiritual dryness, financial hardship, or leadership struggles.”
In his address, Rev. Udofia reminded the church leaders that they have an important role to play in providing guidance and direction, especially in times when the nation is facing widespread challenges. He urged them to stay rooted in their faith and be a beacon of hope for the people.
