The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recently made a remarkable announcement regarding Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun, who has now made history as the first female pilot in the organization.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for the NCS, particularly within the aviation sector, and underscores the evolving role of women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
According to Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the Customs Service, Balogun hails from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, although she was born in Kaduna. She embarked on her career with the NCS in 2002, initially joining as a customs assistant. Over the years, her dedication and passion for aviation propelled her to new heights within the service.
Balogun’s career trajectory is one of persistence and resilience. Before becoming a licensed pilot, she worked as a cabin crew member in the NCS Air Wing, an experience that provided her with valuable exposure to aviation operations. However, her ambition to soar even higher and take the cockpit led her to pursue the rigorous training necessary to become a certified pilot. With the sponsorship of the NCS, Balogun obtained her pilot’s certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida.
In an interview, Balogun shared her personal journey, recounting the challenges she faced along the way. She admitted that it was a difficult decision to leave potentially more lucrative opportunities in the commercial airline sector. However, she emphasized that her commitment to public service and her dream of flying as a pilot outweighed financial considerations.
“It was a tough decision, but my goal was always to contribute meaningfully to public service while fulfilling my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said. “I am proud to be a part of an organization that not only supports my aspirations but also provides opportunities for personal and professional growth.”
Balogun’s achievements are not just confined to her pilot’s license. She has also earned an advanced diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, and holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University. Her educational background, combined with her determination and hard work, has helped her carve out a distinguished path in the Nigeria Customs Service.
Reflecting on her groundbreaking success, Balogun stressed the importance of her accomplishments as a source of inspiration, particularly for women both within the aviation industry and society at large. “Becoming the first female pilot in the NCS Air Wing reflects my commitment to not only advancing my own dreams but also contributing to the operational efficiency and capacity of the NCS,” she remarked.
