Labour Party (LP) member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Dalyop Chollom, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Chollom, who represents the Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, announced his defection in a letter presented during a House session on Tuesday. The letter was read by Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen, who shared the lawmaker’s reasons for the move. According to Chollom, his decision followed extensive reflection, and he cited the ongoing internal crisis within the Labour Party as a key factor influencing his departure. He expressed his belief that joining the APC would enable him to better serve his constituents.
Defection Sparks Debate in the House
The announcement was met with opposition from the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers). Citing Section 68 (1)(d) of the Nigerian Constitution, Chinda argued that the defection was invalid and demanded that the House reject Chollom’s letter. He insisted that lawmakers who switch parties must first provide evidence of their resignation from their original party.
“We cannot continue to put the cart before the horse. That letter you read was not right,” Chinda remarked. He further argued that if the Speaker found the defection valid, the legislator’s seat should be declared vacant, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Speaker Abbas, however, maintained that he had reviewed the lawmaker’s submission and was satisfied with the documentation provided. He ruled Chinda out of order, stating that the defection was in compliance with House procedures.
Labour Party Criticizes the Defection
Reacting to the defection, Labour Party member George Ozodinobi from Anambra voiced disappointment, rejecting Chollom’s claim of internal party turmoil. Ozodinobi insisted that the Labour Party remains united and functional, disputing the rationale for the defection.
Wave of Recent Party Defections
Chollom’s move to the APC is part of a broader wave of defections within the National Assembly. Last Thursday, four other Labour Party lawmakers—Representatives Tochukwu Chinedu Okere (Imo), Donatus Matthew (Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Cross River), and Esosa Iyawe (Edo)—also joined the APC. Additionally, Representative Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) transitioned to the APC. Ibori-Suenu is the daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori.
The defections highlight the increasing consolidation of power by the APC, raising questions about the challenges facing opposition parties in maintaining unity and retaining their members.
Senator Samuel Bako Lalong was present during Chollom’s announcement, signaling the APC’s growing influence in Plateau State. These developments continue to reshape the political landscape ahead of future elections.
