Controversial human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has been granted bail in the sum of ₦30 million by an Ekiti State Magistrate Court. The court set specific conditions for his release, which include the following:

  1. A ₦30 million bond.
  2. The provision of two sureties, with at least one being a property owner.
  3. The surrender of his passport.
  4. A restriction on granting media interviews.

Farotimi’s bail was confirmed on Friday by prominent human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who shared the news on his social media platform, X.

This development follows a legal dispute initiated by a petition from the renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Afe Babalola, which led to Farotimi’s arrest. He was remanded in prison on December 7, 2024, after being charged with 16 counts of criminal defamation. These charges stemmed from the publication of his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
