Former President Buhari Denies Claims of Property Revocation in Abuja
Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, has dismissed reports claiming that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revoked his property in Abuja. In a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesperson, it was clarified that the property in question is not personally owned by the former president but was allocated to the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation, a non-profit organization established by individuals close to him.
Shehu emphasized that Buhari does not have any personal land or property in Abuja, and the property in question was lawfully acquired with the support of well-meaning Nigerians and associates of the former president. The Foundation, he noted, had undertaken the acquisition of the land, not Buhari himself.
Addressing concerns regarding the revocation, Shehu acknowledged that the acquisition had faced bureaucratic challenges, particularly from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). According to him, the FCDA had imposed an unusually high fee for the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy, a charge that was disproportionately applied to similar organizations.
Shehu also pointed out that the revocation by the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory did not come as a surprise to Buhari, noting that during his presidency, he had publicly stated that he was not interested in acquiring additional properties in Abuja.
Concluding the statement, Shehu urged critics in the digital space to verify their facts and refrain from involving the former president in unfounded controversies. “Let those jumping up and down in the digital space get their facts right and stop dragging the name of the former president into baseless controversies,” Shehu asserted.
This clarification comes amid ongoing debates surrounding the administration’s actions regarding land allocations and property ownership in Abuja.
