At least ten people have been confirmed dead following a tragic incident at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja on Saturday morning, where a stampede occurred during a food distribution event.
The stampede led to several people being trampled, resulting in a devastating loss of life.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh. According to the statement, ten bodies have been recovered from the scene. Among the victims were four children and six adults, who have been confirmed dead so far.
In addition to the fatalities, around eight other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. Of the injured, four have already been treated and discharged, while the remaining victims are still receiving medical attention.
Josephine Adeh further reported that the FCT Police Rapid Response Squad and the FCT Joint Task Force were able to successfully disperse and evacuate the large crowd, which had exceeded a thousand people. The authorities are continuing their efforts to manage the situation and provide support to those affected by the tragedy.
