A Brazilian court has ordered the removal of a song by British singer Adele from radio and all streaming platforms worldwide over an alleged copyright infringement.
The ruling, made by Judge Victor Torres, follows a claim from Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, who accuses Adele of copying his work.
Geraes asserts that Adele’s 2015 song “Million Years Ago” bears striking similarities to his 1996 song “Mulheres,” which was performed by the renowned Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila. Geraes argues that Adele’s song copied elements of his composition, and he is suing for lost royalties, as well as demanding $160,000 in moral damages. He is also seeking a songwriting credit for his contribution to the track.
In addition to the lawsuit, the court has warned the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal Music, the record labels associated with Adele, that they could face a fine of $8,000 for each instance of non-compliance with the court’s order.
