Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reflected on the challenges he faced during the #EndSARS protests, describing it as one of the most difficult tests of his leadership.
Speaking on Monday in Ikeja during a session with 30 fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the profound impact the protests had on his governance but emphasized that the needs of the people must always take precedence.
The #EndSARS protest, which began in October 2020, was sparked by a viral video of a young man allegedly killed by officers of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
What began as a demand for the disbandment of SARS due to widespread police brutality quickly evolved into a broader movement addressing issues such as poor governance, unemployment, and social injustice. The protests garnered international attention and support, with thousands of Nigerian youths taking part in demonstrations across the country. However, in Lagos, the protests were met with violent repression by security forces, leading to numerous deaths and injuries among protesters.
Sanwo-Olu reflected on the difficult period, stating, “One of my toughest moments as a leader was during the #EndSARS protest. We were tested as a government, but we must continue to prioritize the needs of Lagosians over our struggles. As a responsive and responsible government, our duty is to put the people first.”
He further emphasized the importance of resilience in leadership, particularly in challenging times. “No bad news stays forever,” Sanwo-Olu said. “You must work hard to create good news and ensure that people listen to it.” His message underscored the need for leaders to remain focused on positive outcomes even amid adversity.
In addition to addressing the #EndSARS protest, Sanwo-Olu took the opportunity to praise the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the former governor of Lagos State, and encouraged the academy fellows to draw inspiration from his leadership. “I know your generation may not fully understand who Alhaji Lateef Jakande was, but he epitomized true leadership,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “That is why we are still talking about him today.” He urged the fellows to emulate Jakande’s exemplary leadership, which continues to serve as a benchmark for governance in the state.
