Suspected Boko Haram terrorists carried out a bold attack on a Nigerian military base in Wajiroko, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024.
According to Sahara Reporters, the assault involved the use of multiple armed drones carrying locally fabricated grenades, a rare and troubling escalation in the insurgent group’s tactics.
The attack reportedly injured six soldiers, who received first aid on-site and are awaiting further medical care. The terrorists initially launched a brief gunfire assault on the Forward Operating Base, which soldiers successfully repelled. However, the reprisal came quickly, with drones releasing explosives that damaged a military gun truck and inflicted further casualties.
Military sources stated that up to four armed drones were observed during the operation, marking an apparent shift toward more sophisticated strategies by Boko Haram. This development underscores the group’s persistent ability to adapt despite years of military operations aimed at neutralizing them.
Boko Haram, which has plagued Northeastern Nigeria for nearly two decades, continues to pose a significant threat, causing widespread displacement and loss of life. While the Nigerian military has frequently announced successes against the group, the insurgents remain active and capable of launching coordinated attacks such as this one.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, as well as the need for enhanced counter-drone strategies to counter emerging threats in asymmetric warfare.
