The historic city was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday after a tragic stampede at the popular Oja Oba market left 15 dead and dozens injured.
Authorities have since charged two prominent figures, Olori Naomi, the estranged wife of a local monarch, and Hamzat Alade, a controversial community leader, with murder.
The incident occurred during a highly anticipated charity event organized by Olori Naomi, where hundreds had gathered to receive food and financial aid. Eyewitnesses reported that chaos broke out when rumors of insufficient supplies spread through the crowd, triggering a deadly stampede.
Hamzat, a key organizer of the event, has been accused of negligence after failing to implement adequate crowd control measures despite warnings from local security officials.
Police spokesperson DSP Adewale Ajayi revealed in a press conference, “Both individuals face charges of criminal negligence and involuntary manslaughter for their roles in this preventable tragedy.”
While Olori Naomi has publicly expressed her sorrow, claiming she was unaware of any security lapses, Hamzat remains defiant, alleging sabotage by political rivals seeking to tarnish his reputation.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with activists demanding stricter regulations for public gatherings. Meanwhile, the families of the victims are calling for justice as investigations continue.
