Catholic Diocese of Nnewi Mourns the Brutal Murder of Reverend Father Tobias Okonkwo

The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi has confirmed the tragic and violent killing of Reverend Father Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo by unidentified assailants.

Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, a priest and trained pharmacist, was fatally shot on Boxing Day in Ihiala, Anambra State. The horrifying incident unfolded along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to a statement released by Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, Chancellor of the Nnewi Diocese.

This latest tragedy comes on the heels of another unsettling event in the region— the abduction of 75-year-old retired Anglican Archbishop, Most Reverend Godwin Okpala. Over two weeks since his kidnapping, the whereabouts of Archbishop Okpala remain unknown, further heightening concerns over the rising insecurity in the area.

The Diocese expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Fr. Okonkwo, describing it as a devastating blow to the Church and the community at large. However, they remain steadfast in their faith, seeking divine consolation during this period of mourning.

Fr. Okonkwo was born on August 11, 1984, and ordained a Catholic priest on July 11, 2015. He was deeply committed to both spiritual and professional service. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Manager of the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala. His dedication to education and healthcare made him a beloved figure in the community.

In addition, the Diocese urged authorities to intensify efforts in addressing the deteriorating security situation in the region, which continues to threaten the lives of clergy and ordinary citizens alike.

Details of the funeral arrangements for Fr. Okonkwo will be announced in due course, the statement noted.

As the community mourns this senseless act of violence, it also highlights the urgent need for improved security measures to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
