Military Defends Airstrike in Sokoto, Insists Only Terrorists Were Targeted
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has reaffirmed that recent military operations in Sokoto State were aimed exclusively at terrorists and criminals.
This statement was made during his visit to the state on Thursday amidst widespread controversy following an airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, which reportedly resulted in civilian casualties.
General Musa addressed concerns surrounding the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, and emphasized that the operation targeted members of the Lakurawa terrorist group. He stressed that any individuals found in the company of terrorists during the operation were considered collaborators.
Conflicting Reports
The airstrike reportedly claimed the lives of at least 10 civilians and left several others injured. While the Sokoto State government alleged that some victims were “innocent villagers,” the military maintained that the operation was a precision strike against criminal elements.
During a briefing at Giginya Cantonment in Sokoto, General Musa assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the facts. However, he insisted that the narrative of the strike being indiscriminate was being manipulated by criminals seeking to gain public sympathy.
Military’s Stance on Civilian Collaboration
The CDS made a strong appeal to civilians, urging them to avoid associating with terrorists or providing them support. He stated:
“We have individuals who continue to harbor these criminals. Once you do that, you make yourself a target. Our appeal is simple: do not allow these elements to stay among you or give them any form of assistance.”
General Musa explained that the military takes significant precautions to minimize collateral damage during operations, adding that any errors would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
Appeal to the Media
He also called on the media to be cautious in reporting such incidents, stressing that criminals often exploit media platforms to manipulate public perception.
“These individuals [terrorists] use the media to push their agenda. It is dangerous to accept their narratives without scrutiny,” he warned.
Commitment to Protecting Civilians
Despite the controversy, General Musa reiterated the military’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity while ensuring that civilian casualties are minimized. He urged residents to leave areas known to harbor terrorists to facilitate more effective military operations.
“Avoid staying in places where criminals and terrorists operate. If you are not with them, distance yourself so we can carry out operations without putting innocent lives at risk,” he advised.
The CDS vowed that the military would continue its constitutional duties, including counter-terrorism efforts, while adhering to strict operational protocols to avoid harm to non-combatants.
