The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed that he has no regrets about his decision to support President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.
Wike, who previously served as the governor of Rivers State for eight years under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the remark during a thanksgiving service organized by the PDP in Ochigba, held in the Ahoada East and West Local Government Areas of the state.
In his statement, Wike expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for placing his trust in him. He also recalled that he faced threats prior to the elections due to his support for Tinubu, but remained resolute. Wike emphasized that, given the same circumstances, he would make the same choice again without hesitation. “I have no regrets, I have no apologies. If the opportunity comes, I will do the same thing,” he affirmed.
In addition to discussing his political stance, Wike openly acknowledged his role in orchestrating the removal of Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the PDP. He revealed that Secondus had been working to impose his cousin, Tele Ikuru, as the next governor of Rivers State, despite opposition from the people of the state. Furthermore, Wike stated that Secondus did not support Siminalayi Fubara’s candidacy, which contributed to his ousting from the party leadership. According to Wike, Secondus’s actions made his removal inevitable.
Wike made these comments while speaking at the Ahoada East and Ahoada West PDP end-of-year thanksgiving service in Ochigba, located in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The FCT Minister also took the opportunity to criticize former Rivers State Governor Celestine Omehia and current Governor Fubara. He expressed displeasure with their recent statements made during the commissioning of projects in the state. Wike responded directly to Secondus’s recent allegations, where the former PDP chairman had branded him an “enemy of the state.” Wike questioned the apparent alliance between Secondus and Governor Fubara, casting doubt on the motivations behind their newfound partnership.
In this statement, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to his political beliefs, underscoring that loyalty to his principles and his people would always come first, regardless of opposition or threats.
