PDP Reacts To Attack On Journalist By Samuel Anyanwu’s Aide

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the assault on Ndubuisi Orji, a reporter with Daily Sun, by Emmanuel Okoronkwo, an aide to Senator Samuel Anyanwu. The party has stated that the attack is completely against its ideology and constitution.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, expressed the party’s regret over the incident, describing Okoronkwo’s actions as uncalled for, regrettable, and unfortunate. During a press conference on Tuesday, Ologunagba emphasized that the PDP has always upheld the critical role of the press in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

The incident occurred on Monday at the PDP’s headquarters in Abuja, when Okoronkwo allegedly slapped Orji multiple times while the journalist was performing his duties. Orji was reportedly locked out and forcefully prevented from entering the premises alongside other accredited journalists.

Ologunagba clarified that while the PDP National Secretariat was closed for secretarial activities during the holidays, it did not restrict press access. He added, “The PDP, as a Party committed to the Rule of Law and the democratic tenets of freedom of the Press, transparency, and openness, strongly condemns and completely dissociates itself from such acts of violence against members of the press and the media.”

Okoronkwo Acted on His Own

Ologunagba further explained that Okoronkwo, who was not part of the party’s security department, had no authority to prevent journalists from doing their job. He noted that Okoronkwo’s actions violated the PDP’s democratic principles and the staff code of conduct at the National Secretariat.

The PDP spokesman assured that the matter would be dealt with in accordance with the party’s internal rules. “The PDP is committed to defending the Constitutional freedom of the press and will not condone any action that infringes on this legitimate freedom,” he said.

The PDP has expressed regret over the incident and reiterated its unwavering respect for the press, especially members of the PDP Press Corps, and emphasized their role in promoting accountability, transparency, and the sustainment of democracy in Nigeria.
