The Catholic Diocese of Warri in Delta State has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from his priestly duties over allegations of entering into marriage in the United States.

Oghenerukevwe was involved in a marriage ceremony with Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas. The announcement was signed by Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, the Bishop of Warri, alongside Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the diocesan Chancellor and Notary.
The diocese invoked Canon Law 1394 §1, which automatically imposes suspension on clerics who attempt marriage. The decree stated:
“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a latae sententiae suspension, and I, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, hereby officially decree that he is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry.”
The diocese revealed that prior to the marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had submitted a formal request on November 30, 2024, to be released from his canonical obligations. However, he failed to complete the necessary documentation for the process before proceeding with the marriage. This failure violated the procedural requirements of the Catholic Church, leading to his immediate suspension.
Under the terms of the decree, the priest is prohibited from presenting himself as a member of the clergy or performing any sacred ministry. The diocese emphasized the immediate enforcement of the canonical penalties outlined in Canon 1333.
Despite the suspension, the diocese acknowledged Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s right to appeal the decision, noting that he could seek revocation or amendment of the decree if he demonstrates a sincere willingness to reform.
The statement concluded with a prayerful note:
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation.”
Reports indicate that video footage of the marriage ceremony circulated widely on social media, prompting swift action by church authorities. The incident has sparked discussions within and beyond the Catholic community, raising concerns about clerical discipline and adherence to the vows of celibacy.
