The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum has rejected any political alliance or arrangement that could weaken the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governors declared that they would not support political alliances capable of undermining the electoral prospects of APC candidates or President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
The position is being viewed as a setback to the political activities surrounding the “Rainbow Coalition” associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been mobilising politicians from different political parties in support of Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The minister has consistently maintained that the coalition is not intended to work against President Tinubu or the APC.
Rather, Wike has described the initiative as a broader political movement aimed at bringing politicians from different parties together to secure victory for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
However, the APC governors have now drawn a distinction between supporting Tinubu’s re-election and supporting political arrangements that could undermine APC candidates contesting other elective positions.
The governors reached the position during a closed-door meeting held in Abuja.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, announced the resolution after the meeting.
Uzodimma said the governors remained committed to the APC and would not participate in any political arrangement that could create divided loyalty within the party or undermine its candidates.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support, or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the reelection of Mr. President, weakening the APC, or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.
The declaration could further shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as various opposition figures and political groups continue to explore alliances and strategies ahead of the polls.
The APC governors’ position also signals their intention to maintain the party’s structures and electoral interests while backing President Tinubu’s bid for another term in office.
