The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has commenced efforts to strengthen its political structures across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that it would take necessary lawful steps to protect the votes and mandate of its presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
The party said the move was driven by what it described as growing support for Makinde, particularly among young Nigerians, as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.
According to the party, Makinde’s growing relationship with Nigerian youths was built around his actions and policies rather than campaign rhetoric.
The APM specifically cited the governor’s response to the 2020 EndSARS protests, claiming that Makinde personally identified with protesting youths and directed security agencies in Oyo State to provide adequate protection for their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
The party said, “Governor Makinde personally joined the youths in the 2020 EndSARS protest and directed security agencies to give them adequate protection to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful protest.”
The APM also recalled Makinde’s opposition to the Federal Government’s suspension of X, formerly known as Twitter, in June 2021.
The party said the governor had argued that the suspension could negatively affect young Nigerians whose businesses and livelihoods depended on the platform.
According to the APM, Makinde maintained that X was not merely a communication platform but had become an important avenue for domestic and international business, e-commerce and other economic activities.
The party therefore attributed the increasing attention surrounding Makinde’s presidential ambition to what it described as Nigerians’ growing recognition of his record in public service.
The APM said it would not take the confidence allegedly reposed in the party and its presidential candidate for granted, stressing that it was already expanding its structures nationwide in preparation for the election.
“Our Party and Presidential candidate do not take this confidence reposed in us by Nigerians for granted. We are intensifying every effort in strengthening our structures across the country to ensure that our votes and mandate are firmly protected,” the statement said.
The party also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their support and urged voters to remain vigilant as the 2027 elections approach.
It called on citizens not only to participate in the electoral process but also to ensure that their votes are protected through lawful and constitutional means.
The APM said citizens should “be alert and get ready not only to vote but also to use every means within the ambit of law to resist any attempt by any anti-democratic force to rob them of their victory which they will surely secure with the Makinde/Daura ticket on the banner of the APM.”
The party’s statement comes as political parties and aspirants intensify grassroots mobilisation and begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
