Leading presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has disclosed details of the rigorous screening process he underwent before emerging as the presidential flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Obi made the revelation in a post shared on X, where he recounted how party officials subjected him to an extensive verification exercise that lasted for more than two and a half hours in Abuja on Monday, May 19.
According to the former Anambra State governor, members of the screening committee carefully examined his academic qualifications, personal records, and other official documents to confirm his eligibility for the presidential race.
“Yesterday, May 19th, in Abuja, I attended the Presidential screening organised by our party, which took over two and a half hours,” Obi wrote.
“They carefully reviewed all my documents, including my degree certificates, NYSC credentials, and age declarations.”
Obi further revealed that the screening was not limited to document verification alone, as he was also questioned extensively about his vision for Nigeria and the kind of leadership he intends to offer if elected president.
“During the process, I also addressed questions regarding my vision for a new Nigeria and the type of leadership our nation urgently needs right now,” he stated.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate explained that after successfully completing the exercise, he was formally cleared by the committee and handed the presidential nomination form he had previously purchased.
“Following this, I was cleared and received the presidential nomination form I had previously paid for,” Obi added.
He also praised the screening panel, which was reportedly led by former Ebonyi State governor Sam Egwu, describing the process as transparent, professional and thorough.
“I would like to commend the screening committee, led by former governor Sam Egwu, for their thorough and professional approach,” he said.
Obi equally applauded the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for what he described as its commitment to democratic principles and due process.
“Additionally, I appreciate our party’s leadership for upholding the democratic process,” he added.
The development comes amid growing political activities and early alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Obi remaining one of the most talked-about opposition figures in the country.
