Former Director of Mobilisation for the Obidient Movement, Morris Monye, has publicly apologised to former presidential candidate Peter Obi and supporters of the movement over statements contained in his earlier resignation letter.
Monye had announced his resignation on Monday in a lengthy statement where he criticised aspects of the movement’s structure and operations, citing frustration over what he described as poor performance during the recent Anambra election.
At the time, he stated that despite his dedication, sacrifices and financial commitment to the movement, many planned objectives had not been achieved.
“Almost a year down the line, most of our short, medium, and long-term plans have not been met. I won’t be part of optics and no work,” he had written.
He also claimed that he personally funded several mobilisation activities across the country, including travels, voter awareness campaigns, support for local structures and logistics, allegedly without financial assistance from the movement’s leadership or Peter Obi himself.
According to Monye, there was no official funding structure for the Directorate of Mobilisation and little direct communication regarding its activities.
“No money was given to the Directorate of Mobilization. There’s no bank account even for the directorate. In fact, Mr. Peter Obi has never asked what we are doing in mobilization no communication, nothing,” he alleged.
He further disclosed that the pressure, financial burden and alleged harassment from supporters of the ruling government affected both him and his family.
Monye also highlighted achievements recorded during his time in office, including the establishment of online registration systems for Obidients, activation of support groups, creation of regional and local government structures, and the launch of the Obidient NextGen campus network.
He additionally revealed that he helped raise funds for the Obidient governorship candidate in Anambra State and initiated plans to provide polling unit agents with affordable body cameras to improve election accountability.
However, in a fresh statement released afterwards, Monye admitted that he allowed emotions and frustration to influence his judgment while drafting the resignation letter.
He described some of the remarks directed at Peter Obi as immature and unnecessary.
“I take full responsibility. No one forced me to write it. No one edited it. It came from me, and it was a mistake,” he said.
Although he later deleted the letter, Monye acknowledged that the action did not erase the hurt or disappointment it may have caused within the movement.
Addressing Obi directly, he apologised for comments he admitted did not reflect the values of accountability, sacrifice and constructive engagement associated with the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
He also apologised to members of the Obidient Movement, describing them as passionate young Nigerians who deserved better than public internal disagreements.
Monye clarified that his apology was not motivated by a desire for political relevance or a return to leadership within the movement, noting that he is now focused on his private life.
He concluded by stating that leadership requires accepting responsibility for mistakes and rebuilding trust through actions rather than words.
