Kano Police Invite NDC Assembly Candidate Over Alleged Display Of Firearm At Rally

The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the State House of Assembly, for questioning over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm during a political gathering.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.

According to Kiyawa, the police came across a viral video during a routine cyber patrol in which Warkal was allegedly seen openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle at what appeared to be a political gathering.

The police spokesperson said the alleged display, if established, could constitute a violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidate members of the public and threaten public peace.

The statement read in part:

“The Kano State Police Command, while on routine cyber patrol, came across a video clip circulating on social media platforms where one Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was seen openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a Pump Action Rifle during what appears to be a political gathering.”

Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, directed that Warkal be invited to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

The police said the NDC candidate is currently at the State Intelligence Department (SID), where investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The command warned that it would not tolerate acts of lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the status of those involved.

The police also urged political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act and other relevant laws.

“All political activities must be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law,” the statement added.

The Kano State Police Command further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace in the state before, during and after the political season.
