The Federal Government has announced plans to sell petrol at a discounted price at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations for the next 30 days.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja.
Oyedele explained that the arrangement should not be regarded as a return of petrol subsidy, saying the government would instead sell the product at cost during the period.
According to him, the government will also negotiate a landing cost for petrol, which will be reviewed on a monthly basis.
He said the discount would particularly prioritise public transport operators in order to help reduce the impact of fuel prices on transportation costs.
“There’ll be a discount on NNPC petrol for the next 30 days, with priority for public transporters.
“So, it’s not a subsidy, the government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” Oyedele said.
The announcement comes amid continued concerns over petrol prices and their impact on transportation and the cost of living across the country.
The Federal Government is expected to provide further details on the implementation of the arrangement, including the applicable prices and how public transporters will benefit from the discount.
