The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 45-year-old man, Ani Chidi, before an Enugu East Magistrate’s Court sitting in Nkwo Nike over a video allegedly showing an attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw.
Chidi was arraigned on Monday before Chief Magistrate F. E. Chukwu, Chief Magistrate Grade 1, on three counts bordering on alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation.
The charges were reportedly brought under Section 24(2)(a) and (c)(i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
According to the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent and marked MEN/151c/2026, the police alleged that Chidi published and circulated footage of the September 12, 2026 incident across social media platforms and online media outlets.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendant made false accusations against three individuals Ani Nnabuike, Solomon Ifeanyi and Monday Anninwe by identifying them as members of the armed group that allegedly invaded the NDC meeting.
The police are also expected to present evidence relating to the publication and circulation of the footage and the alleged statements made against the three individuals.
Following his arraignment, the court reportedly ordered that Chidi be remanded in prison custody.
The case comes amid continuing controversy surrounding the alleged attack at the NDC political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw on September 12.
The allegations against Chidi remain before the court, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
