The Ofokutu Royal Dynasty and the Ijesha People have filed a lawsuit against Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over the installation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland.
The case, which has sparked controversy within Ijesha’s royal circles, had its first hearing before Justice Aderibigbe of the Osun State High Court, Ilesa Division. The judge has adjourned the matter to March 6 for further proceedings.
Claims of Irregularities and Power Play
Prince Adebanji Obembe Ofokutu, representing the Ofokutu family, accused the government of manipulating the traditional selection process, stating:
“It’s the Ofokutu family’s turn to present a candidate for the Owa throne, as the other ruling house had already reigned. But the Haastrup family, which has ruled twice before, unlawfully hijacked the process using state influence.”
He further described the selection as a “kangaroo process,” alleging that only five out of thirteen kingmakers were involved in the decision, violating established traditions.
Adding to the dispute, Princess Oluwatoyin Faloye (née Obembe) criticized the N10 million fee imposed on contestants vying for the throne. She also challenged Oba Haastrup to undergo the traditional Ipebi rites, questioning the legitimacy of his ascension.
Defying Court Orders?
The Ofokutu family accused the state government of ignoring a court injunction and proceeding with Haastrup’s installation, arguing that the move was politically motivated rather than rooted in tradition.
Despite the lawsuit, Governor Ademola Adeleke officially presented the staff of office to Oba Haastrup in December 2024, following the passing of Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, who ruled for 42 years. During the ceremony, Adeleke urged Haastrup to foster unity and development in Ijeshaland.

As the legal battle unfolds, the Ofokutu Dynasty remains firm in its pursuit of justice and tradition, vowing to challenge what they see as a breach of their royal heritage. With the next hearing set for March 6, the fate of the Owa Obokun throne remains uncertain, as the court prepares to decide on a matter that could redefine Ijesha’s royal succession.
