The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student, Faith Ajoke Alayande, at the institution’s campus in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Alayande was reportedly found unresponsive within the hostel premises on Friday, August 7, 2026, after concerns were raised about her whereabouts.
According to information shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama, another student reportedly discovered the deceased within the hostel premises and alerted the Chief Matron.
The matron subsequently went to the scene and later reported the incident at the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 a.m.
The police confirmed that officers visited the institution following the report, while the deceased’s remains were subsequently evacuated to a morgue for preservation.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident and said an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Adebisi said the deceased had reportedly left a note before her death, prompting a hostel mate and a relative to become concerned about her whereabouts.
According to the police spokesperson, efforts were made to locate Alayande before she was found within the hostel premises.
“I can confirm the incident. The deceased reportedly wrote a suicide note and, before her hostel mate and a relative could locate her, she jumped from the rooftop of a four-storey building,” Adebisi was quoted as saying.
She added that the hostel matron reported the matter to the police, leading to the deployment of officers to the scene.
“The matron of the hostel reported the incident, prompting police operatives to visit the scene. Her body has been evacuated to a morgue for preservation,” the police spokesperson said.
The command said investigations were ongoing, although further details about what may have led to the student’s death had not been disclosed.
Alayande’s death has also prompted emotional reactions from people who knew her during her university years.
Uchenna Marvin, who shared a tribute to the deceased, said Alayande had been under his supervision while she was an undergraduate and had worked with her during her research project.
According to him, Alayande graduated from the university before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School in 2026 to continue her legal education.
Describing her death as deeply painful, Marvin recalled discussions they had during her university years, particularly around issues relating to medical law and the right to life.
He said Alayande had expressed strong views during their academic discussions and was willing to engage extensively on complex ethical questions.
“Faith was my supervisee during her years in the University when she wrote her research work. She graduated and went to the Nigerian Law School this year,” Marvin said.
He described the news of her death as “heartwrenching” and expressed regret over the loss of a young woman who had recently begun her professional journey.
The incident has generated concern within the Nigerian Law School community, particularly because Alayande was reportedly in the early stages of her legal training.
The police investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the events leading to the student’s death.
Authorities have not released further details about the investigation, and the Nigerian Law School had not, at the time of reporting, issued a detailed public statement on the incident.
