Jamal Simmons, who served as Vice President Kamala Harris’s communications director from January 2022 to January 2023, has recently suggested that President Joe Biden should contemplate resigning, opening the path for Harris to make history as the United States’ first female president.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Simmons praised Biden’s presidency, noting, “Joe Biden’s been a phenomenal president; he’s fulfilled so many of the promises he made.” Simmons added that Biden has one more opportunity to cement his legacy as a “transitional figure” by stepping down within the next 30 days, allowing Kamala Harris to assume the presidency.
This proposal comes in the wake of the November 5, 2024, presidential election, in which former President Donald Trump defeated Harris, reclaiming his position as the 47th President of the United States. Trump’s victory in pivotal swing states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania secured his return, with his inauguration scheduled for January 2025.
Simmons’s idea reflects broader discussions within the Democratic Party about its leadership direction and potential generational shift, particularly after this recent election defeat. The suggestion underscores a sentiment among some Democrats who see Biden’s possible resignation as a strategic move to inspire a new phase of leadership.
