In a significant ruling delivered on Friday morning, Justice Musa Kaakaki of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to pay N30 million in damages to human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore.
On November 3, it was reported that Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, declared Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, wanted “for public disturbance.”
The Friday judgement stems from a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Sowore challenging the Lagos State Police Command’s decision to unlawfully declare him wanted in November.
“In a stinging and unequivocal rebuke, the court condemned CP Bozo Moshood Jimoh of the Lagos police command for unlawfully declaring me WANTED last year October and awarded N30 million in damages against the Nigeria Police Force.
“The judgment was clear, firm, and excruciatingly loud in its message: abuse of power has consequences. Justice prevailed, at least today.”
